Living near exercise facilities 'does not lead to lower BMIs'

Living near exercise facilities 'does not lead to lower BMIs'

27 September 2010 12:18

People who move to houses near outdoor recreation facilities often believe that they will lose weight through exercise in their men's and ladies fitness wear, but this is not always the case, a study has shown.

Researchers from University of Alberta found that people who said they had moved to be closer to outdoor recreation opportunities between 2002 and 2008 actually showed an increase in their body mass indices (BMI).

"The more people said they chose their neighbourhood because of its access to outdoor recreation, the higher their BMI," explained Tanya Berry of the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta.

She went on to say that people could have moved closer to such facilities for the benefit of their children.

Back in August, Peter Heir, editor of the Running 4 Women website, emphasised the importance of outdoor exercise.

He explained that running outdoors is better for the body than running on a treadmill as unlevel ground causes the muscles around the ankles, knees and hips to work harder, which makes them stronger.
