Local council launches 'free swimming scheme'

19 August 2009 15:10

Women's sportswear can be put to good use for free under a new free swimming scheme being run by Kettering Borough Council.

The local authority is offering free swimming lessons to non-swimmers at Parkwood leisure centre this summer.

Classes are being funded by the Amateur Swimming Association, which is offering five blocks of six-hour long lessons for those aged over 16 years old.

Councillor Russell Roberts, portfolio holder for the community, explained that that the free swimming scheme has already proved popular, attracting 8,000 free of charge visits so far.

"We hope that by offering free swimming lessons to non-swimmers we will be able to remove another barrier faced by people who want to swim but feel they can't," he added.

There are only 12 spaces per session available, so fitness fanatics keen to enhance their training regime are being urged to sign up soon to take advantage of the teaching.

The government's Change4Life campaign suggests that swimming is a great way for families to stay active, healthy and have fun together.
