Long-term elevated heart rate 'linked to significant risk of death'

Long-term elevated heart rate 'linked to significant risk of death'

13 August 2010 17:00

Those who have a resting heart rate that is consistently elevated over a number of years are at a significant risk of dying prematurely, a study has shown.

Researchers from the Ronald O Perelman Heart Institute at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center studied more than 9,000 patients.

They found that tracking heart rate over time can provide a simple yet important marker of potentially fatal health issues that could possibly be prevented through diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Peter Okin, cardiologist at the facility, said that a healthy diet and exercise, perhaps in men's or ladies fitness clothing, have been shown to lower heart rate.

He added that no medication has been approved in the US for this indication without side-effects.

Researchers from the University of Buffalo in the US recently found that children who walk to school are less likely to develop high blood pressure and, therefore, heart disease later in life.
