Women bored of heading down to the local fitness centre in their gym wear should join a roller derby club for a fun and adrenaline-pumping workout.
Roller derby is an all-female race on roller-skates that has evolved into a contact sport, making it both exhausting and exhilarating, claims Rebecca Newman, writer for the Daily Telegraph.
"An intense workout that uniquely targets the glutes and hamstrings, core muscles and upper body, it certainly beats the treadmill," she writes.
Newman explains that there are 30 roller derby clubs in the UK and that interest and attendance is ever growing.
She went along to a session with the London Rollergirls club, founded in 2006, and the first thing she was taught was how to fall over without sustaining injury.
Steven Hunter, an exercise physiologist at London South Bank University, told Ms Newman that roller derby has "great cardiovascular benefits".
Those seeking an exercise that will work their cardiovascular system but is not quite as high-octane as roller derby should try hill walking or walking at a speed, according to the NHS.
