Women's motivation for putting on their ladies gym wear is the desire to maintain a healthy lifestyle, whereas men are more interested in improving their physique, according to the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.
The study of 83 men and women found that, despite their differing motivations, both had equal commitment to their fitness regimens.
Another study published in the American College of Sports Medicine journal showed that motivation to put on women's sportswear and get active was higher in those that played sport, as opposed to those who just exercised.
It was also revealed in the journal that people who combat anxiety and weight gain by putting on their ladies sportswear and doing regular, moderate exercise experience a boost to their mood and reduced body weight.
According to the NHS, two-thirds of UK adults are now considered overweight or obese and good nutrition and regular exercise are the best ways to combat this.
