Medicines could be used to alter the amount that women exercise in their ladies fitness clothing, a study has suggested.
Researchers from the University of California, Riverside, have found that exercise is a heritable trait that can be passed down genetically through successive generations.
They discovered that selective breeding can enhance activity levels in mice, with those bred to run a lot producing high-running offspring.
Theodore Garland Jr, whose laboratory conducted the multi-year research, said: "Down the road people could be treated pharmacologically for low activity levels through drugs that targeted specific genes that promote activity."
He went on to say that, in the future, drugs could be developed that make it more pleasurable to engage in exercise and less enjoyable to sit still for long periods of time.
Earlier this month, researchers from the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit in Cambridge found a person's genetic predisposition to obesity can be reduced by around 40 per cent if physical activity levels are increased.
