Meditation exercise 'reduces stress in breast cancer patients'

16 October 2009 13:23

Women with breast cancer can reduce stress and improve their mental health and emotional well being through the Transcendental Meditation technique, according to a new study.

A two-year study, published in the current issue of Integrative Cancer Therapies, looked at 130 breast cancer sufferers, aged 55 years and older.

Participants were randomly assigned to either the Transcendental Meditation technique or to a usual care control group.

"The Transcendental Meditation technique reduces stress and improves emotional well-being and mental health in older breast cancer patients. The women in the study found their meditation practice easy to do at home and reported significant benefits in their overall quality of life," Dr Nidich, one of the researchers, said.

Other research, published in August, encouraged women to don their bamboo yoga wear as it found that twenty minutes per day of guided workplace meditation and yoga combined with six weekly group sessions can lower feelings of stress by more than ten per cent and improve sleep quality.ADNFCR-2569-ID-19412639-ADNFCR
