Women who walk their children to school in the morning, perhaps in their ladies fitness wear, can reduce their offspring's stress levels, a study has suggested.

Researchers from the University of Buffalo in the US found that children who walk to school are also less likely to develop high blood pressure and , therefore, heart disease later in life.

In the study, one group of children took a simulated walk to school and another had a simulated car ride.

The first group later experienced smaller elevations in systolic blood pressure, heart rate and perceived stress while taking a short exam than the second group.

James Roemmich, senior investigator in the study, said: "The cardiovascular disease process begins in childhood, so if we can find some way of stopping or slowing that process, that would provide an important health benefit."

Earlier in the month, Heart UK suggested that those who avoid exercise, which can include regular walks, are more at risk of high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease.
