Mums 'walk over 14 miles a week' with baby and pushchair

10 February 2010 15:00

Mums who regularly don their ladies sportswear in an attempt to keep fit may be burning more calories out of the gym than they realise, recent research has shown.

Research conducted by Mothercare found that most take their babies out and about in a pushchair an average of six times a week and walk at least two miles a time.

This equates to just over 14 miles a week or more than 741 miles a year.

Liz Day, parenting consultant at Mothercare, said that the results could probably come as a surprise to many mums.

''Getting out and about with your baby is a great way of getting back into shape and staying healthy so we were delighted with the results,'' she added.

Recent research from the British Heart Foundation, however, suggested that not enough women were donning their ladies fitness wear as two thirds of adults quizzed did not complete the recommended exercise quota of 30 minutes five times a week.
