Heart failure patients who build their muscles, perhaps through exercising in gym clothing, are more likely to survive than those who are less muscular, a study has suggested.
Antigone Oreopoulos, a researcher from the University of Alberta's School of Public Health, studied 140 heart failure patients.
These participants underwent a scan that measured their muscle mass and levels of body fat.
Mr Oreopoulos found that those with increased muscle mass had better nutrition and a lower severity of heart failure.
Those with higher body fat had increased inflammation and a reduced capacity for exercise.
These findings suggest that heart failure patients could benefit from having more muscle mass and lower levels of body fat.
Earlier this week, results of a study conducted by researchers from the Montreal Heart Institute revealed that heart patients who live with children are less likely to exercise than those who do not.
The study also found that living with a spouse or friend had no impact on heart patients' participation in physical activity.
