Music exercises the brain in a way similar to how physical activity in ladies fitness wear works out the body, a study has suggested.
Scientists from Northwestern University collated data from a wide range of research projects and found links between music training and developments in language, speech, memory, attention and even vocal emotion.
They suggested that learning an instrument can exercise the brain by making it select important sound information and filter out noise that is not relevant.
"Akin to physical exercise and its impact on body fitness, music is a resource that tones the brain for auditory fitness," the Northwestern University researchers said.
They went on to say that this discovery requires society to re-examine how music can shape individual development.
Earlier this year, fitness coach Christine Luff, writing on the About.com guide to running, suggested people should listen to music while they exercise, claiming that this can provide them with extra motivation to complete their workout.
