A recent study which found that women's fertility is negatively affected by physical activity of an extreme intensity and frequency has a number of flaws, according to the NHS.
Research by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the Emory University in Atlanta investigated the association between physical activity, fertility and parity (number of children) in a group of several thousand healthy Norwegian women.
Those who exercised "to exhaustion" were 2.3 times more likely to be infertile than women who said they "take it easy".
According to the NHS, there are a number of factors that affect the interpretation of these results.
For example, it said the researchers do not appear to have adjusted for the multiple statistical testing that they performed. The use of multiple statistical testing means that it is more likely that their positive results are due to chance alone.
The NHS recommends that women don their ladies fitness wear and do at least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week but it warned that short periods of intense exercising after months of doing nothing can cause injuries.
