New device 'could reduce cancer diagnosis period'

02 December 2009 17:00

A new device could reduce the time in which cervical cancer is diagnosed and put an end to the discomfort of smear tests, according to researchers.

Regular exercise in ladies fitness wear can reduce the risk of developing cancer but, in some instances, it cannot be prevented. For these women the new hand-held device, called the APX, could catch the disease in its early stages, enabling it to be successfully treated.

Robert Music, director of cervical cancer charity Jo's Trust, said: "It's vitally important to get the message out there that [cervical] screenings saves lives."

He added that the UK's cervical screenings and the recently-introduced HPV vaccines could "pretty much prevent the majority of cervical cancers" if everyone took advantage of them.

According to Cancer Research UK, cervical cancer is the 12th most common cancer in women in the UK with around 2,800 new cases of cervical cancer diagnosed each year.

The American Cancer Society recommends women should don their ladies fitness wear and exercise for 30 minutes, five days a week to help cut the risk of developing cancer.ADNFCR-2569-ID-19491289-ADNFCR
