London women looking to don their ladies sportswear and exercise more might want to take note of new funding which is being pledged in the English capital.

A total of 18 schemes are due to receive a share of £2.4 million in financial support from Boris Johnson, the city's mayor, with sports participation being focused on.

Discussing the funding, Mr Johnson noted that various benefits can arise when people take the time to get involved in sport.

He stated: "Sport brings huge health and social benefits to individuals, communities and this city."

The mayor is hoping to "maximise the potential of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to increase participation in sports across London".

Towards the end of last month, Mr Johnson was also keen to flag up the fact that the first coaches which people have can inspire them on to greater sporting achievements as they progress in their careers.
