Women could soon be donning their ladies gym clothing and taking part in more effective exercise programmes thanks to a new technology currently under development.
Researchers from Michigan State University's (MSU) departments of Electrical Engineering and Kinesiology have been creating a new wearable sensor network that assesses a person's physical activity levels and overall wellbeing.
Small wireless sensors are attached to a person's wrist, upper arm and lower leg and they measure not only the frequency, intensity and time of an exercise session but also the type of activity.
"By detecting more information about physical activity, we can begin tailoring effective exercise programmes," said Karin Pfeiffer of MSU's Department of Kinesiology.
Earlier in the year, researchers from the University of Alberta claimed that female athletes sustain more injuries than male sportsmen as their training programmes are developed by and for men.
Study leader Dr Vicki Harber claimed that the biological differences between the sexes are not taken into consideration when programmes are created.
