The number of running-related injuries that children are sustaining in their gym clothing has increased by 34 per cent, a study has suggested.
Researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Ohio, studied young people aged from six to 18 from 1994 to 2007.
An estimated 225,344 cases of running-related injuries were treated at US emergency departments during this period.
This works out as an average of more than 16,000 each year, the researchers state.
Dr Lara McKenzie, principle investigator at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital, said that encouraging children to take up running is a great way to ensure that they are physically active.
However, she went on to say that "formal, evidenced-based and age-specific guidelines are needed for paediatric runners" to ensure that children are taught the proper way to run "in order to reduce the risk of injury".
Last month, Dr Rachel Thompson, deputy head of science at the World Cancer Research Fund, said that running is a great and inexpensive way for people to keep fit.
