Obese women are more likely to develop arthritis than those of a healthy weight, according to a recent study, which may persuade women to don their ladies sportswear and head out for a spot of exercise.
Researchers from the Toronto Western Research Institute found that arthritis and arthritis-attributable activity limitations (AAL) were more common in the US than in Canada and attributed this to the higher levels of obesity and physical inactivity in America.
Dr Elizabeth Badley, one of the study's authors, said: "Public health initiatives that promote healthy weight and physical activity may benefit from including arthritis concerns to its message and could potentially reduce the incidence of arthritis and AAL."
The findings of the study have been published in the March issue of Arthritis Care and Research, a journal of the American College of Rheumatology.
According to Arthritis Care, exercise can be very beneficial for those with arthritis, so women with the condition who want to reduce their symptoms may want to consider a trip down to the local fitness centre in their gym wear.
