Obese pregnant women 'should do gentle exercise daily'

Pregnant women who are obese should don their ladies fitness clothing every day and take part in gentle exercise.

This is according to Jaqui Clinton, health campaigns manager at the pregnancy research charity Tommy's, who claimed that even walking to the shops every day will help these women to improve their health.

She went on to suggest that it is important for pregnant women to eat healthily too, cutting out high-fat and high-sugar foods.

"By eating sensibly in pregnancy you will feel better and will be doing the best for your baby, with the added bonus that you may not have so many extra pounds to lose after the birth," Ms Clinton added.

Her comments follow the publication of a report from the Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries, which revealed that one in 20 pregnant women in the UK is severely obese.

This means that more than 38,000 women are putting their health and that of their baby at risk.
