Overweight and obese women may need to check potential pit-falls with a health practitioner before undertaking a new fitness regime, it has been claimed.
Sports medicine physician and director of the Women's Sports Medicine Program at Rush University Medical Centre, Chicago, Kathy Weber said that obese people are at more risk of injury when doing particular activities.
Commenting in an article for the McClatchy Tribune, Ms Weber suggested that the appropriate women's fitness wear needs to be used.
She told the newspaper: "It's really important because they may have excess weight on their limbs, they need to make sure they have a supportive shoe to absorb the impact.
"Your body is under a lot more stress when you have more weight so higher impact activities would not be the first choice for an overweight individual."
Her claims come two months after the Daily Telegraph reported a GP has started recommending golf as a good exercise for obese people.
Dr Richard West told the newspaper in June: "Golf is the sort of exercise which anybody who can walk any distance can do."
