Being obese during pregnancy can cause problems such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and complicated births, according to a midwife.
Janet Fyle, from the Royal College of Midwives, told the Mirror that women need to watch their weight and what they eat both before and during pregnancy.
Speaking to the newspaper, Alison Merry, pregnancy exercise expert and director of BloomingFit.com, suggested women should put on their comfortable women's fitness wear and exercise to make their pregnancy easier.
"Cardio exercise not only improves circulation and builds a stronger and more efficient heart and lungs for the mother, it also improves nutrient-rich oxygen flow to the placenta from where the growing baby receives all its oxygen and nutrients," said Ms Merry.
Last month it was reported that over a third of pregnant women still believe the old wives' tale that they should not exercise after becoming pregnant if they did not before.
The NHS recommends donning ladies fitness wear and staying fit during pregnancy. It said exercise helps expecting mothers cope better with the physical demands of pregnancy, labour and motherhood.
