Weight loss through exercise in ladies gym clothing could help obese women to avoid cognitive decline in later life, a study has suggested.
Psychologists at the University of Texas at Austin conducted a study with the aim of better understanding why midlife obesity is linked to a higher risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older age.
They found that insulin sensitivity in obese people caused them to display different brain responses to their normal-weight peers during a challenging cognitive task.
Obese, overweight and normal-weight participants performed equally well on the task, but the obese individuals displayed less activity in the inferior parietal lobe of their brains.
"The good thing about insulin sensitivity is that it's very modifiable through diet and exercise," said psychology graduate student Mitzi Gonzales, who co-authored a paper on the study.
Earlier this month, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh found that regular walking protects the size of people's brains and can, therefore, preserve their memory in old age.
