Obesity can be prevented through regular exercise, perhaps in gym wear, but the National Heart Forum has predicted that cardiovascular disease attributable to obesity will increase considerably in the future.
Data from the Health Survey for England was analysed by the National Heart Forum and a report, titled A Prediction of Obesity Trends for Adults and their Associated Diseases: Analysis from the Health Survey for England 1993-2007, has been published.
The report predicts that, by 2020, the proportion of adults aged between 20 and 65 who will be obese will be 41 per cent for men, and 36 per cent for women.
Professor Klim McPherson, chair of the National Heart Forum, said: "The serious health problems associated with obesity mean that these continuing rising trends will impose a substantially increased burden on the NHS."
Government campaign Change4Life recently launched its second phase, which focuses on encouraging adults to lead healthier lifestyles.
The campaign suggests that women don their ladies fitness wear and build up to being active for 30 minutes, five times a week.
"Every ten minutes counts so it's easy to get going," the campaign website claims.
