Female office workers are exercising less in their ladies fitness clothing than they were 30 years ago, a study has suggested.
Researchers from the University of Montreal looked at databases of studies on the health of Canadians that included between 17,000 and 132,000 respondents.
They concluded that a lack of physical activity during office hours could be responsible for the fact that obesity increased by ten per cent between 1978 and 2004.
Lead author of the study Carl-Etienne Juneau, a researcher at the University of Montreal Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, said that the promotion and marketing of exercise should be altered.
"Exercise can't just be an individual thing anymore. We must focus on groups," he said.
The findings of the study have been published in the early online edition of the journal Preventive Medicine.
Earlier this week, results of research conducted in the US called the Look Ahead study revealed that overweight type 2 diabetes sufferers can reduce their risk of heart disease by exercising regularly.
