The 2012 Olympic games will encourage more women in the UK to don their ladies fitness wear and give horse riding a try, the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Therapeutic Riding has suggested.

Lynne Munro, chair of the association, said that the Olympics' equestrian events are very popular and will promote more interest in the form of exercise.

She went on to explain that horse riding has many benefits to both physical and mental health.

"You have improved balance … increased hand-eye coordination, hand-foot coordination … [and] if you have an active ride you burn loads of calories, so it's a workout as well in an enjoyable kind of way," Ms Munro added.

Her comments follow the launch of a campaign by the British Equestrian Federation called Hoof it to Health.

This aims to get more people from all parts of the UK out of their houses and give horse riding a try.
