Women suffering from osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee or hip can experience improvement in pain, physical function and self-perceived effect if they don their ladies fitness clothing and lead a physically active lifestyle, a study has suggested.
Researchers in the Netherlands found that exercise therapy has short-term benefits in terms of pain reduction and movement but that this effect diminishes when the patient is discharged.
They discovered that if a physically active lifestyle is adopted after discharge, then long-term benefits can be enjoyed.
"Better adherence to home exercises and being more physically active improves the long-term effectiveness of exercise therapy in patients with OA of the hip and/or knee," lead study author Martijn Pisters explained.
The study is set to be published in the August print issue of Arthritis Care & Research.
This research supports that of the University of Grenoble Medical School in France published last month.
It found that rheumatoid arthritis patients who exercise regularly experience not only improved function, but less joint pain and greater quality of life.
