Women who don their ladies running clothing and go for regular outdoor jogs enjoy mental as well as physical benefits, an expert has claimed.
Peter Heir, editor of the Running 4 Women website, said that running outdoors on ground that is not level builds muscles around the ankles, knees and hips, making them stronger.
He explained that this is called pronation and that it is one of the biggest benefits of running in the great outdoors, aside from the mental benefits that are produced.
Mr Heir's comments follow the publication of a new review in the journal BMC Public Health.
This review of 25 exercise studies was conducted by the University of Bangor and it found that exercising in natural environments can have a positive impact on a person's wellbeing.
Mr Heir said that treadmills are still useful and suggested that people use these when the weather is poor, rather than just giving up on exercise until the sun comes out.
