Mums should set a good example to their children by exercising regularly, perhaps in their ladies fitness clothing.
This is according to Elaine Sawetz, a fitness and obesity consultant, who noted that children are more likely to lead an active lifestyle if they observe their parents doing so.
Her comments follow the recent publication of research commissioned by Crealy Great Adventure Parks, which found that children who live in the countryside are less active than those who reside in urban areas.
The study found that more than a quarter of children who lived in urban areas spent at least three hours each day running around outside, compared to just a fifth of those living in the countryside.
Ms Sawetz stressed the importance of exercise for children: "Being active, children are less likely to develop diabetes or other diseases in later life and are more likely to … enjoy themselves."
She recommended badminton, rounders, tennis, cricket and even hula hooping as good activities for getting the heart pumping.
