Pensioners 'can set fitness goals too'

Pensioners 'can set fitness goals too'

20 September 2010 12:00

Women should not hang up their ladies fitness wear for good because, as they get older, they can set themselves exercise goals too, an expert has claimed.

Personal trainer Matt Roberts said that older people can be just as active as their younger counterparts.

"Start with something at a low level, like going for a walk daily, targeting a short distance such as 3km," he advised those wanting to get back into exercise.

For those who already exercise regularly, he recommended they take part in "something at a higher intensity".

His comments follow fitness guru Jane Fonda's recent announcement that she is releasing two fitness videos aimed at the older audience in time for Christmas.

Mr Roberts stressed that fitness is essential for good health in later life as it can improve mobility and prevent broken bones.

"If you are stronger there is a decreased chance of injury," the expert concluded.
