Most people in the UK are aware of the benefits of donning gym clothing and exercising regularly, but many choose to ignore these and remain physically inactive.
These claims have been made in a piece on the British Medical Journal's website by Mayer Hillman, senior fellow emeritus of the Policy Studies Institute at the University of Westminster in London.
He asserts that there is currently a trend towards declining fitness and that it has been predicted that more than half of the population will be clinically obese by 2050.
"The government now aims to get far more of the inactive population walking or gardening regularly or, preferably, taking up more vigorous physical activity, such as sports, aerobics, or cycling," Mr Hillman writes.
Earlier in the year, the government launched its Cycle to Work alliance, which encourages women to leave their cars at home and use their bikes to get to work instead.
