Women who are obese and rarely or never don their ladies fitness clothing are more likely lose quality years from their lives than their slim and active counterparts, a study has suggested.

The research, published in the September issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that the prevalence of obesity has increased 89.9 per cent from 1993 to 2008.

During the same period, quality-adjusted life years lost to US adults due to morbidity and mortality caused by obesity have more than doubled.

"Collaborative efforts among groups at the national, state and community (local) levels are needed in order to establish and sustain effective programmes to reduce the prevalence of obesity," said Dr Haomiao Jia, one of the study's authors.

According to the NHS, in 2008 nearly a quarter of those aged over 16 in England were obese.

Ten per cent more men were obese than women, the service's figures show.
