Physical inactivity 'should be recognised as a disease'

Physical inactivity 'should be recognised as a disease'

11 August 2010 17:05

Women who do not do enough exercise in their ladies fitness wear should be recognised as suffering from a disease, two medical experts have claimed.

An article titled Physical Activity in the UK: A Unique Crossroad? was recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The authors, Dr Richard Weiler and Dr Emmanuel Stamatakis, write that physical inactivity should be considered for recognition as a disease in its own right, as it has significant links with death.

Sue Baic, lecturer at the University of Bristol's department of exercise, nutrition and health sciences, rubbished this suggestion, asserting that physical inactivity is a choice as opposed to a disease.

"Certainly, we would acknowledge it as being a risk factor the same way as smoking or having a poor diet [is]," she added.

Ms Baic went on to say that some people do not seem to realise how important exercise is in keeping the body healthy and reducing its chances of developing disease.
