Physical stimulation, such as exercise in ladies fitness wear, could curb the growth of cancer, a study has suggested.
Researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Arthur G James Cancer Hospital and the Richard J Solove Research Institute conducted the study.
They found that environments rich in physical, mental and social stimulation activates a nervous-system pathway by which the brain communicates with fat tissue.
The pathway, called the hypothalamic-sympathoneural-adipocyte axis, tells fat cells to stop releasing the hormone leptin into the bloodstream.
Leptin normally helps to control appetite, but the researchers found that it also curbs cancer growth.
Leader of the research Dr Matthew During said that the anti-cancer effect observed in the study was not merely due the animals undergoing an increased level of activity.
"It was induced by social and physical challenges that are associated with the release of stress hormones from the adrenal gland," he explained.
Last month, Dr Kathryn Schmitz, a member of the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, said it is important for cancer patients to exercise during and after treatment.
