Physio 'is beneficial for MS sufferers'

Women suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) can experience an improvement in their symptoms if they don their ladies fitness clothing and take part in physiotherapy sessions, PhysioFunction has claimed.

Jon Graham, clinical director of PhysioFunction, said that physiotherapy helps MS sufferers as it strengthens the muscles that are not affected by the disease.

This allows these fully-functioning muscles to better compensate for those that are weakened by MS, he explained.

"It can also assist in the early stages when there is only temporary impairment to the nerve cells, and those muscles that have been weakened can be strengthened again through appropriate exercise," he added.

Mr Graham's comments follow the recent publication of a study funded by the MS Society, which shows that women with MS are more likely to carry a gene linked to the illness than men.

This means that women are more likely than men to pass the disease down to their daughters.
