Pregnant women should get into their gym clothes and start an exercise regime, for the benefit of themselves and their baby, it has been claimed.
A new study detailed in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons highlights that mums-to-be who do regular exercise benefit from improved overall musculoskeletal and physiologic health as well as pregnancy related symptoms.
The researchers recommended a mix of aerobics, impact and non-impact activities, resistance training and swimming to help lower maternal blood pressure, reduce swelling and lower the risk of post-partum depression.
"When a woman becomes pregnant, she often re-evaluates her lifestyle," said Dr Marlene DeMaio of the Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia, who co-authored the study.
"She is motivated in a new way to deliver a healthy baby, and be healthy herself," she added.
One expert, Sally Ann Carroll, style editor at Prima Baby, recently said that post-birth women should not be in too much of a hurry to squeeze back into their old exercise clothes, stating that remaining healthy is the most important thing.
