Progressive resistance training 'is good for seniors'

Older women can prevent strength and muscle loss by donning their ladies fitness clothing and taking part in progressive resistance training, a study has suggested.

Researchers at the University of Michigan Health System analysed datafrom a number of studies and found that strength is the most important factor in a person's physical function.

The researchers then looked into the best and safest ways of improving this in elderly people.

"Resistance exercise is a great way to increase lean muscle tissue and strength capacity so that people can function more readily in daily life," said Dr Mark Peterson, a research fellow in the University of Michigan's physical activity and exercise intervention research laboratory.

He went on to say that, no matter how old a person is, they can still increase their strength significantly.

Earlier this week, researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis revealed that a combination of diet and exercise reduces frailty in obese elderly people.
