Put down the computer console and put on gym clothing to improve brain power

Brain-training games do not actually increase cognitive function as much as was first thought, according to recent research, but putting on ladies fitness clothing and going for a run is a viable alternative, it has been suggested.

A study of 11,430 people, commissioned by the BBC, found that participants achieved higher scores on the brain-training computer games over time, but their memory and other mental skills did not improve.

Researchers from Illinois University conducted a separate study, which found that improving cardio-respiratory fitness by just five per cent through running can improve performance in mental tests by up to 15 per cent.

Explaining why women should don their ladies fitness clothing and head out for that long-overdue jog, the study's author Professor Arthur Kramer said: "It boosts blood flow - and in turn, oxygen - to your brain, which fires and regenerates receptors, explaining how exercise helps ward off Alzheimer's."
