The recession has resulted in ten million people in Britain feeling more fit and healthy than they did this time last year, according to new research.
Britain Under Pressure research, commissioned by Friends Provident, found that 55 per cent of respondents frequently exercise for 30 minutes, five days a week.
The recession seems to have changed the type of exercise that people are doing, with 19 per cent of people taking part in more free methods of exercise, such as running in women's running wear, or following home exercise videos in their ladies fitness wear.
Over the past year 83 per cent were found to have changed their eating habits, with 48 per cent of those surveyed eating fewer ready meals or takeaways.
Healthy alternatives like fresh food and home-grown vegetables have replaced junk food in the diets of 13 million people, according to the study.
The NHS said that getting health benefits from physical activity is easier than many people think, and need not cost a lot as there are many cheap activities that individuals can do that do not involve equipment or technical expertise.
