People can reduce their risk of dying from colon cancer by donning their gym clothing and exercising regularly, a study has suggested.
The research was conducted by scientists at the Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St Louis.
It is one of the first studies to show that exercise can make colon cancer less deadly.
The physical activity of some 150,000 men and women between 1982 and 1997 was recorded, as were the number of colon cancer diagnoses between 1998 and 2005 and deaths from the disease between 1998 and 2006.
"People who were consistently active over the course of their adulthood had a lower risk of death from colon cancer than those who were sedentary," said first author Kathleen Wolin.
The researchers found that those who exercised consistently for at least ten years have the lowest risk of dying from colon cancer.
Research published in the December issue of the International Journal of Clinical Practice reveals that regular exercise can not only prevent cancer from developing, but can reduce people's risk of coronary heart disease.
