Regular exercise can 'reduce stroke risk'

26 November 2009 10:48

Thirty minutes of exercise five days a week is "enough to help reduce your risk of stroke", according to the Stroke Association.

Joanne Murphy, research liaison officer for The Stroke Association, said: "It's important that people choose activities that they are going to enjoy, so that they keep them up."

She added that it is important that the chosen exercise increases the heart rate but said that small lifestyle changes, such as an improved diet, cutting down on alcohol, quitting smoking and being active can reduce the risk of stroke.

The Department of Health recently announced that its Act F.A.S.T campaign has led to an increase of 55.5 per cent in stroke calls to 999 and raised awareness of the importance of quick treatment to stroke survivors.

According to the NHS, regular exercise, such as in women's fitness wear, can also help to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, heart disease and other potentially fatal conditions.ADNFCR-2569-ID-19480444-ADNFCR
