A mentally and physically active lifestyle could protect against the memory and learning problems often experienced by patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), a recent study has shown.
The research has been published in the June 15th print issue of the medical journal Neurology.
Dr Peter Arnett, of Penn State University in Pennsylvania, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study, said its findings suggest that certain activities build a person's cognitive reserve, which can act as a barrier against disease-related memory impairment.
He went on to suggest that MS sufferers should don their ladies fitness clothing more regularly, adding: "It seems reasonable to encourage people with MS to get involved in activities that might improve their cognitive reserve, such as mentally stimulating activities like crossword puzzles and word games, regular exercise and social relationships."
Earlier this month, a study conducted by Dr Kelvin Jones, of the faculty of physical education and recreation at the University of Alberta, suggested that women suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis could slow their disease's progression by exercising more.
