Regular exercise 'decreases breast cancer risk'

Regular exercise 'decreases breast cancer risk'

13 October 2010 12:00

Women can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer if they don their ladies fitness clothing and exercise regularly, even if they have a family history of the disease, a study has suggested.

Researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center studied women aged 50 to 79 and asked them to take part in a minimum of 20 minutes of vigorous exercise at least five days a week, maintain a normal weight and drink no more than one alcoholic beverage a day.

In those who had a family history of later-onset breast cancer but adhered to the healthy behaviours, the rate of invasive breast cancer was 5.94 per 1,000 woman-years.

This compares with 6.97 per 1,000 woman-years among females who did not adhere to any of the behaviours.

Last month, Colombian researcher Dr Heather Greenlee announced proposals to conduct a study into the success of exercise in increasing remission rates of cancer survivors.
