Women who suffer from sleep disorders can reduce or overcome these by exercising routinely in their gym clothing, a study has suggested.
Researchers from Dartmouth Medical School were studying the sleep patterns of patients with functional dyspepsia, which is a form of chronic stomach pain.
They found that disordered sleep is significantly more common in functional dyspepsia patients than in healthy people in a control group.
It was discovered that a number of mental and physical factors are related to disordered sleep in this group.
Women with functional dyspepsia are 2.3 times more likely to have disordered sleep than men with the same condition, the research revealed.
"The key finding here is that disordered sleep may affect nerve function in upper GI tract which could lead to worsening dyspepsia, creating a vicious cycle leading to more pain and more insomnia," said Dr Brian Lacy, associate professor of medicine at Dartmouth Medical School.
Earlier this week, research conducted by the University of Washington in Seattle suggested that using exercise to treat restless leg syndrome in fibromyalgia patients could help them to sleep better.
