School leaving teens 'are not exercising'

The majority of 19-year-olds are not donning their gym clothes and taking regular exercise, according to figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats.

Tam Fry, of the Child Growth Foundation and National Obesity Forum, says theproblem starts at school.

"The whole of physical education (PE) in schools is flawed," he said.

Mr Fry added that the current government aspiration for all children to receive at least two hours per week of supervised physical education is not being met.

He described the new aim of five hours of PE a week as "ludicrous" and said it would never be possible unless the government enforces a change in curriculum.

The Liberal Democrats' figures show a steady decline the percentage of 16-18 year-olds participating in regular sport at least once a month over the last four years.
Even while still at school, just 20 per cent of pupils in years 12 and 13 take part in three hours of sport a week.

The average time pupils in these years spend doing PE each week is just half an hour, according to the figures.ADNFCR-2569-ID-19444862-ADNFCR
