Scientists in the US are studying the effectiveness of different methods of getting young adults to maintain a healthy weight.
The University of Pittsburgh Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center will test innovative ways of getting people to don their gym clothing and exercise more as well as encouraging them to eat healthily.
Technologies such as text messaging, online social networking and Bluetooth-enabled scales will be used to motivate study participants to eat well and stay active.
"We're really excited about using technology to enhance our weight-loss and physical-activity studies," said John Jakicic, director of the Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center.
"We think these technology enhancements will significantly improve this age group's overall health," he added.
Back in September, a report commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence suggested that the NHS should give overweight people money to encourage them to lose weight.
