Scottish women urged to get active

05 March 2010 18:02

Women across Scotland are being urged to change into their gym clothing and get fit, even if it means just dancing around the house while doing daily chores.

Forming part of the Scottish government's efforts to get the nation in shape ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, this latest initiative is aimed at addressing the 'obesity timebomb' potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of adults.

With the government's own research having revealed that 40 per cent of Scots could be classed as clinically obese within the next 20 years if action is not taken, the Active Nation campaign launched this week is calling on people to step up their exercising efforts.

Specifically, adults across Scotland being encouraged to don their gym clothing and do 30 minutes of exercise five time a week, though even slipping into women's fitness clothing and dancing at home can have significant health advantages, the government has stated.

"Active Nation will encourage people to increase their activity levels, recognising that making even a small change can make a difference to their lives," public health minister Shona Robinson said.

This comes as a report released by Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has advised that employers could hold the key to combating the growing obesity crisis in the UK.
