Female cyclists can develop effective training regimens by performing a relatively simple, do-it-yourself test in their ladies fitness clothing, a study has suggested.
Exercise scientists at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) foundthat cyclists just need to own a power meter, which is a device that mounts on a bicycle's rear wheel, and a stationary bicycle trainer in order to do the test.
UNH graduate student Jay Francis found the power test to be as effective as other laboratory measurements for determining exercise intensity.
"Power is a very unbiased way of measuring your exercise ability, compared to speed, heart rate or perceived exertion," said Mr Francis.
He went on to explain that the test involves cycling as fast as possible for three minutes, adding: "You just push and push and push and never let up."
Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Cambridge University and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden recently suggested that moderate activity, such as cycling, can substantially reduce the risk of early death.
