Sleep, like exercise, 'improves mood and physical health'

Regular exercise, such as trips to the gym in ladies fitness wear, are known to benefit health in a number of ways, but good quality sleep can provide some of these benefits too, according to the Sleep Council.

Jessica Alexander, spokesperson for the council, said that sleep can improve both mental and physical health.

"By short-changing on it, you are going to make life tougher," she said.

Her comments follow research published by the University of California, Berkeley, which found that an hour's nap can restore brain power and make it easier to learn new facts.

Ms Alexander said the research suggests that those who do not get much sleep at night could improve their memory by choosing to have a 90-minute sleep during the day.

But she conceded that this may not work for everyone and that some people function better sleeping in one session of between six and nine hours, whereas others prefer dividing their sleep into "chunks".
