Heart attacks in England decreased by ten per cent in the year after the smoking ban was imposed, according to researchers.
The research was commissioned by the Department of Health and found a considerably greater fall in the number of heart attacks than expected.
Enforced on July 1st 2007, the smoking ban made virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England smoke-free.
According to NHS website www.smokefreeengland.co.uk, the ban ensures a "healthier environment, so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from second-hand smoke".
The British Heart foundation (BHF) said that to prevent heart attacks it is not only important to quit smoking but to exercise, eat a healthy diet and be aware of dangers such as drinking, high blood pressure and stress.
Physical activity in women's fitness wear improves both physical and mental health.
The BHF recommends taking exercise classes or playing a sport, but said everyday things like walking, gardening and climbing stairs also count as physical activity.
