Women should try donning their ladies fitness wear and taking part in speed endurance training as it has many benefits according to a sport and exercise expert.
Jens Bangsbo, a professor at the department of exercise andsport sciences at the University of Copenhagen, said: "It is a way to reduce the amount of training without compromising running performance".
However, he warned that the "everyday runner" should not just go straight into regular speed endurance running, but should implement it progressively into their training over weeks or months.
Research by Mr Bangsbo and co-workers recently demonstrated that endurance trained runners can improve not only short-term but also long-term performance by reducing their volume of training by 25 per cent and introducing speed endurance training.
In the study this training comprised of six to 12 30-second sprint runs, which were done three or four times a week.
The research was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology.
