Spinach can make muscles work more effectively, a study has shown, which could interest women who are keen on exercising in their ladies fitness clothing.

Research published in the February issue of Cell Metabolism reveals that a small dose of inorganic nitrate, which is found in spinach, causes people to consume less oxygen while riding an exercise bike.

"We're talking about an amount of nitrate equivalent to what is found in two or three red beets or a plate of spinach," said Eddie Weitzberg of the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.

He went on to say that fruit and vegetables can help to prevent health problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Mr Weitzberg suggested that inorganic nitrate could be the candidate behind these benefits.

Last month, Dr Marilyn Glenville, a nutritionist specialising in women's health, said that eating a balanced diet that features lots of vegetables is also important in preventing cancer.
